One-page log for the Office 2021 end-of-support decision

A hard-stop deadline becomes manageable when the option, seat count, owner, cost, migration path, and confirmation date are written down before the renewal conversation.

The deadline starts the work, not the decision

A hard-stop software deadline is easy to miss when it sits only in a calendar. Support for Office 2021 ends on October 13, 2026, and no later security-update bridge is available. The enterprise Office LTSC 2021 edition also loses Microsoft support on October 13, 2026, and no extended security update option is available. The date becomes an operating decision when the option, seat count, owner, cost, migration path, and confirmation date are written down.

Office 2016 and Office 2019 lost Microsoft support on October 14, 2025. A fixed date needs a named path before the renewal conversation starts.

The short log gives a date an owner

The log is short enough to fit in a shared drive and specific enough to remain useful after a staff change. It is also the template for the next end-of-support tool, so the team does not start from a blank page. Each line exists because a missing line causes a later meeting.

  • Deadline: a calendar date, not a quarter.
  • Chosen option: a named replacement, not a vague upgrade.
  • Seat count: a license or device number that can be counted.
  • Cost: a dollar amount for the chosen option.
  • Owner: a named person accountable for the move.
  • Migration or exit path: a starting task, a stop date, and a fallback.
  • Confirmation date: a day when the record is signed and filed.

When a line is blank, the record is not ready for the renewal conversation.

The option line shows the cost

For this deadline, the replacement choice is not a long menu. The stated paths are Microsoft 365 Apps for cloud-ready teams and Office LTSC 2024 for teams not ready for cloud use, and no transition pricing is available for the October 13, 2026 Office LTSC 2021 end date. Write the chosen option as the product name the finance team will see on the invoice.

Office LTSC 2024 is the perpetual successor, and it receives support through October 9, 2029 under a five-year fixed-lifecycle arrangement that does not include an extended phase. The perpetual path is a fixed term, not a permanent escape.

For Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive, only in-support Office versions are supported clients. A team that keeps an out-of-support client should note the compatibility risk in the migration or exit path line.

Seat count is a material input to the Office LTSC 2021 migration decision because a 500-user organization pays $216,000 per year for Microsoft 365 E3 at $36 per user per month. If the seat count changes, update the cost line before the renewal conversation. The same arithmetic decides whether the owner should budget for a subscription, a perpetual license, or a smaller exit.

The confirmation date closes the record

A decision without a confirmation date is a draft. The confirmation date is the moment the team stops debating and starts executing. It should be a meeting date, not a target.

For the October 13, 2026 Office LTSC 2021 deadline, the organization should identify the internal owner of the LTSC 2021 licenses. In a small company, that owner is often the ops lead, the founder, or the person who already answers the IT questions. The log names that person before the deadline does.

Some adjacent deadlines have their own dates. Office Online Server support ends on December 31, 2026, after which it stops receiving security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. Exchange Web Services migration work should start at least three months before the October 2026 blocking deadline. Microsoft extended home Windows 10 security updates by one year, moving that deadline to October 12, 2027. If the same devices touch those services, add the dates to the migration or exit path line.

File the record where the next owner will find it.
